168 4 speed not 3

168 had choice of 3 speed and MP and IPTO or straight 4 speed and ground drive
Mine was a 74 just before the pto shaft change and hyd filter access under neath. even with IPTO they had dual clutch.
Starting was helped with uprated starter and attention to earth straps.
Wet brakes would put up with lots of abuse if running in agricastrol STOU, went 20 years without being replaced.
Was a very cheap tractor to own and run

It seems they were much cheaper to run and maintain than today hi tec tractors .

I wonder if that was because they hadn't developed the single split torque clutch or they didn't trust the ipto

Something to do with the linkage? When used pressure control, lever goes over constant pumping area. Dual clutch prevents the linkage to go up.

Here in Finland is also plenty of 500-series tractors with IPTO and dual clutch. Workshop manual says that was sold like this in certain areas. Can be something to do with cold climate too. Pressing dual clutch helps starting in frost, when oil is sticky.

Fairy tale i suspect, more like cheap underpowered starters and too lazy to order correct clutches.. Never never underestimate the manufacturers ability to screw up a good product

Just speculated there. 500 have these 125 Ah batteries that fit there front of radiator. The older ones were with 430 ampere cold start current. I think engine spun around very lazy with these when cold or if battery wasn't in perfect condition. Now I've batteries in same size but with about 700 A cold start current and Perkins rotates more rapidly and lights up straight away. My 390 has now only one 50 Ah battery with big start current and starts fine. Before had two batteries wired parallel.

I suspect the dual clutch was left on the IPTO models as a 'Soft Start' feature. If you were operating a baler, muckspreader, rotovator, post hole borer, winch etc it would give the operator much more control -something operators were used to, (plus the ability to stop the PTO instantly).

Leyland made much of their handbrake lever PTO for just this reason and I have to admit even today it seems a handy feature to have at times.

But the PTO is extremely smooth on start up on them
