Mf 3165 loader

I've bought an old massey ferguson 3165 industrial loader. It has a shuttle pedal and the usual 2 brake pedals but no clutch. When selecting a gear I'm just pulling the gear stick into gear and it's making a grinding noise. Is this how you operate this tractor? Or is there a clutch I'm missing?

Yes it’s just simply an old 6speed crash box with a torque converter driven from the engine flywheel. Yes they do tend to grind when selected whilst the engine is running, but once a gear is engaged it can be left like that , stopping & starting can be done whilst it’s in gear as long as the revs are set low. The little F/R + rev pedal should return to neutral if it’s set up correctly. This is the pedal directly in the middle between F/R. The machine should stay still until you rock the pedal to either forward or reverse, the more you press down either way the more you rev the engine! A cracking little transmission for shuttling about in a yard, although not much cop for road work

Thanks for getting back to me, if I can just leave it in a gear I'll do that. I just wanted to check I wasnt missing something.

No worries, the torque converter makes it more forgiving, it kind of extends the gear in away, so you can set off from nothing and rev out and keep the same cog, abit like an automatic car (once you’ve found the gear that best suits the task you’re doing)
