Ours is 1 of the last mabe 95/96? Its 12/12 40k but we have 46 row crop inch rims on the back which leaves her a flyin machine. Pity shes not turbo cause shes wile dead at that speed

I’m on the verge of bying a tidy 1996 hiline, trouble is its a 18/6 gearbox and not a 12/12! It’s hasnt got a loader but not sure how it would work with reversing activities like topping etc. Our old 290 was either too fast or too slow in reversing when topping even with the split

It will be fine for reversing, I never seen any problems with reverse speeds on the 12 speed syncro

12 12 fine on our 390 and 4370. Liked both on loaders. Moving to a 5613 with to many gadgets for my liking. Biggest trouble with 4370 has been front axle problems .

12x12 is great on 30kph tractors. On 40kph the first gear in high range is just too fast to pull away from a stop with any load behind the tractor. The main/only real issue with the 12x12 is a tiny little leaf spring on the range selector that has a tendancy to snap. Dirt cheap part but very many hours of labour to replace, because it is internal and things have to be dismantled to get to it.

The 18/6 is a far better gearbox for 40kph haulage and consists of a three forward, one reverse main box with a three speed range box to give 9x3, plus a Speedshift, on the go power-splitter which doubles the ratios to 18x6. Unlike later 24x24 boxes, this one did not have a hydraulic power shuttle and had a conventional dry clutch.

Is the range selector different on 18×6 compared to 12×12

I've always assumed it to be the same but I've not heard of any issues with the spring on the 18/6. That doesn't mean that there isn't an issue though as there were never many 18/6 tractors in this part of the world and I'm just saying what my personal experience is.
