MF 6290 Hot engine starting problem??

When the engine on my MF 6290 gets hot from working hard , it "SOMETIMES" takes quite a bit of turning over to start it and sometimes as today it will not start at all ,"UNTIL" one loosens of the injector pipe nuts to bleed the fuel system ,it will then eventually start. I have to say the water separator filter can be moved easily from side to side, so I am wondering if a small amount of air is entering the fuel system causing the starting problem , but why only when the engine is really hot ?? I think the water separator threaded securing ring has had it and somehow the securing ring seal is worn out or missing, I will order both parts.
Another issue that may be part of the problem , is that the manual lift pump seems never to have any resistance how ever hard one trys to get it on to the camshaft position ,pump as mush as you like and no resistance .
Any suggestions as to what the problem is ,will be much appreciated ,before I have to resort to having the fuel pump overhauled at vast expense, only to find it was not the problem!!!!! Thanks

It usually does.

Points towards the pump then unfortunately. I was shot down on here before for suggesting pouring some water over the pump next time it does it to eliminate or pinpoint the issue but you could stop it hot by the workshop and use airline to try and cool the injector pump down

At what age does a tractor become a classic? Or are you just not a fan of the 6290? Plenty of 10 series JDs in the Classics earning their keep thread and they're only marginally older.

A 135 is a classic. A 6200 has 30 years to go yet... A 6200 MF, 10 series Deere or NH 60 series will do everything a modern tractor will but at 40k with slightly more noise and discomfort.

I too suggest cooling pump down with hose too see.
Thanks for the suggestions, but out of interest what causes the problem in the fuel pump, something must expand? :scratchhead:

common fault on some.
pour water on the fuel pump and it will likely start
the fix is to get the pump overhauled.
Neighbour had exact same thing very recently

If there was a different timing cover available to fit a Bosch in-line injection pump or a timing cover off a 6180 for a stanadyne pump, it would make the job off them
