as far as i know the long wheel base one are the same but with a better engine-4.318.2 as oppsed to a 4.318. a man local to here has a 298, same tractor and it ia a great going thing but doesnt have the rust issues of the 600 series.

the swb 698 was a 4.236? turbo and what an aniaml to go. but have to say the 298 is the better place to spend the day

Not quite. long wheel base 4wd had 318.2 as did the later short wheel base 4wd. 4.236t was later and called 698t they were all short wheel base.
If we are talking 4wd then look for wear and oil leaks from rear front axle pivot. And as said rusty cab
We both know where there is one of the above that sits outside often getting rusty....:(
I liked it, pulled well on 16.9 rears.

The 318 engine was a really good puller if I recall correctly; sure the 236T would be just as good. The handbrake was in a God awful place on the 318 model, behind and inside your right ankle and below two spool levers which made it extremely hard to operate. Cab rust could be bad and those awful mirrors that are always swinging about at all sorts of angles and never have glass in them because they keep getting pranged.

I drove one for while and it ate track rod ends for some reason i think it was the hyd ram to axle had a track rod end on it that kept working loose and wearing the caseing and needed to be bushed as i recall it was a common fault on them the 698T had a better axle and was overall a better tractor but not that many around as did the 699

PS Yes it was the successor to the 595 model, same engine I think at about 88 hp?
yes it was the successor to the 595 but with the .2 engine and mk3 hydraulics and kontak spool valves which were fitted through out the 600 series unlike the 595 which had an older type hydraulic system and bosch spool valves

I know of a chap with a 698 that he's had around 20 years and it's never put a foot wrong. The rear fenders and top of the cab were replaced a couple of years ago because of tin worm but engine, transmission and hydraulic wise it's hardly been touched.

Sounds as though mechanically they're not a bad old horse, the tin work on this is very good, with next door to new tyres all round. A cheap and nasty seat has been added at some point, but otherwise very tidy. Anyone care to give an estimate on price? Thanks for all the info by the way.

On Thursday 26th September, we’re holding a webinar for farmers to go through the guidance, actions and detail for the expanded Sustainable Farming Incentive (SFI) offer. This was planned for end of May, but had to be delayed due to the general election. We apologise about that.

Farming and Countryside Programme Director, Janet Hughes will be joined by policy leads working on SFI, and colleagues from the Rural Payment Agency and Catchment Sensitive Farming.
