Don't understand why farmers are so interested in reports like this. You mostly have contracts with people who have contracts with the retailers/end users so posts like the above are fairly irrelevant. There's virtually no "open market" in the UK and a few tankers of surplus milk being dumped/traded is hardly going to make Tesco hoike up the retail price of a 4 pinter.

It shows trends. One can say the same about GDT but it gives an indication of global movements. When you supply a cheese processor, such trends are relevant

But does the shop price of cheese fluctuate according to changes in so called "World" markets?

Anyone know what percentage of world dairy production is traded on a free (ie no levies or tariffs) world market? Two of the biggest producers (EU & USA) support their export markets and put tariff walls up against imports.

Bit off topic but, what's everyone's thoughts on arla's cheese plant on sale up chester/North Wales area, would be good to see one of the independent dairies jumping into cheese. £2.5m would be a good investment into a stable market

It’s not the actual factory that costs it’s the cheese in maturation that costs the money and paying for milk and running costs for 12-18months Before you get any income that’s before any marketing costs. But I’m sure these small independent diaries have loads of spare cash to start it up?

Independent as in meadow, £25 million pre tax profit 30 miles from the site, more product diversity, more price security for there producers

Since when were they worried about their producers.
All I'm saying is more investment into processing the better, if more dairies invest in a wide portfolio of produces there'll be less peaks and throughs for everyone. Less of this, "well there only paying that to there producers so we'll drop are price to ares"

I agree with you we need more investment in processing capacity into high value products but wether that is cheese is debatable. With the likes of ornua in the market place it’s extremely tough trading conditions and competitive.

I don't think the were any particular issues with the plant. Arla do not see their future in producing bulk commodity cheddar as it's a low margin product in this country when you are up against Oruna doing it at low margin on open book pricing with the supermarkets. To get a good milk price there are better places to utilise our milk.
