Must see things to do in London

We went to abba voyage last night was a great show and very easy to get to on the DLR
I'll second that, a stunning experience but it will be expensive to take the family.

As others have suggested, there are the world famous landmarks that you can admire without spending anything although it's easier on the HOHO bus but the traffic can be a pain.

Best value in any unfamiliar city in any country imo is the open top bus tour where you can hop on and off anywhere, we usually do a full route then decide where we want to start

some of the bus captains do a hilarious commentary easily worth the fare!
Yes we always do them as you say it's best way to see a new city, Dublin driver was the best one we have had. We did one of the Paris buses a couple of years ago, that was rubbish the commentary was out of sinc with where we were and it didn't seem to cover half the city

A few years ago I went to the claydon open day and we decided to have a few days in Cambridge at the same time, I wrote the directions down so my wife could navigate and while going round the north circular she said aim north is the next instruction ,I said what do you mean aim north ? It's in capitals she said, I looked at what I had written and said that is A1 M north 🙄😂

If you visit The Tower of London, don’t bother with the expensive food there, go for a wander around St Katherine’s docks, a 5 minute walk. Possibly the most tranquil place in London, boats to look at and some really nice coffee shops.

When I go, I usually get off the tube at the Tower, walk across the Tower Bridge, then along the south bank by the Shard, then I have lunch at the Borough Market, maybe visit the Tate and cross the river on the Millenium Bridge and to then walk from St Paul to Trafalgare Square. It is a good, long walk but it gives you a good view of many landmarks.
Another one I like is coming from Kensington through Hyde Park.
For a teenager it would depend on their inclinations I guess... London Eye, Camden Town, Tower of London, Madame Tussauds, Greenwich Observatory, ...

If the tube is running, Raf Museum. Colindale is the tube station. I knew a wartime pilot who flew Lysanders into France delivering and picking up agents. I went looking for the Lysander and walked round it thinking about Gordon and how it must have felt dropping into a field with just 3 torches to guide him.

Try the 139 bus from Waterloo. It goes to Trafalgar Square, Piccadilly Circus, Regent Street, Oxford Street and ends up at Abbey road studios. Buses in London are really cheap. It's cheap sightseeing and especially good when the Christmas lights are on.
The tower of London is really good to go to. Hampton court is good but it is quite far out from the centre so takes most of the day up. My teenagers would be happily go back again.

Years ago during Smithfield week we used to hop on the Circle Line . Easy to spot the farmers, because apart from tweed jackets and ruddy faces, they were the ones that were talking and laughing.
2 or 3 of us used to find a pretty girl and say 'Go on, give us a smile.' One did eventually giggle to a loud cheer and blushingly said 'You daren't laugh or smile because otherwise they [the Londoners on the tube] will think you are mad.' What a strange world, even back then.

We went on the Thames River boat cruise. Didn't have patience for queue's for London eye. The South Bank area next to London eye is nice. We spent a day wandering about there. Nice street food market round back of it.

Got the train out to Harry Potter world. Which I didn't expect to enjoy at all. But was good day trip.

Hyde park was close to our hotel, so went there a few times. Went to Buckingham palace, Saw big Ben and house of parliament.

All noveltys for a Scottish country bumpkin. And free. Had only seen these places on television.

Went to see a show at theatre by Covent garden. I fell asleep, much to my wife's disgust!

If using the tube. Just use bank card and tap on and off at gates. Much cheaper than buying tickets.
I know a guy once in London, was wondering around the Tate gallery when he heard a broad Doric accent bellowing out, it was his neighbour, what are the odds to folk from Insch in the Tate gallery at the same time
