Difficult one really, especially if he is quite fiery if you were to push the subject.

Would he allow someone to test his hearing at home - for example, if all of your household were to get a hearing test carried out, because this way - you are all doing it, plus in the comfort in your own home?

If it may be an option

My mum gets bit frustrated with him missing conversation too,
I think I will try and subtly have a word about hearing test,

Get him to do a hearing test.
My dad suffers with tinnitus, has aids which cancel it out.
I've got tinnitus to a certain extent myself, I expect I'll be the one being shouted at soon enough.

Do it as a collective, then maybe he will not feel singled out.
You never know - you could all be affected to some degree by the noises on the farm, which will make it easier for him to potentially accept. (y)

Oor just go out with the dogs and ask him....

My dads not dissimilar, I’m know I’m going the same way too.

My Nan had a hearing aid which she never worn, we used to tell her the dresser will end up hearing more gossip than her...

The problem that may arise is my dads issue. He can’t hear without his aids but as he does not really want to wear them he doesn’t maintain them properly so there are continual issues. We are forever having to clean them when he complains he can’t hear.

On the other hand mrs Bg spoke on the phone to her dad yesterday. That is the first time for years. They have had to FaceTime so he could lip read. He has new aids which connect to anything by Bluetooth. They also are the best he has had for filtering sound. He says his hearing is 100 times better.

Not cheap but it looks like they are worth the money.

Father in law is a sociable kind of fellow, always had bad hearing but it got to the stage where he was struggling to engage in conversation etc. In noisy environments. Hearing aids changed his life really and made social occasions enjoyable again.

The problem with age is that understanding these things gets difficult and sadly it can only get more difficult for him so I would suggest trying to persuade him sooner rather than later. Try and be quite involved in the maintenance and making sure they work well at the beginning and he may take a shine to them.

My King Charles has a hearing problem when I leave him out for a pee last thing. I clean his ears with a riding crop - Three whacks across his back side when he eventually comes back seems to improve his hearing for about a week. If your dad is a bit cantankerous I would try a hearing test first. Keep the riding crop as a back up. Lol.
