We've got a natural spring and there used to be a windmill pump many years before my time. I'm toying with natural water for the cattle and horses, anyone doing similar? What's the savings and what sort of system?

We have used Spring water for years for houses and livestock, however the last few drought years has meant that the summer/autumn flow has been getting desperately short. We are now in the process of putting in a borehole and while this will have a higher cost at least we will have a guaranteed supply.
It is also possible that we may be able to supply other local houses as the mains supply to the local area is very poor and the cost of putting in a new main would be many thousands of pounds.

If you have a well and electricity, your in a good situation. Drop a submersible pump down the well with a pipe to carry water up to a storage tank. A float switch fitted in the tank starts the pump when the level gets down to a set level and stops it when it's full again. Put your tank as high as poss, preferably within a building for frost protection, then lead pipework down to your troughs. Couldn't be more simple. The water will be fine for stock and a test would soon tell you if it's safe for humans too - probably will be. If it is, hook it up to your house too.

A lot of the farms locally are on a private supply, usually a gravity fed spring.

We have mains but only use it in the house because the pressure from the spring is a bit low.

We don't have filters so occasionally get a blockage in trough valves etc but can cope with that for free water.

Ta for the info, much appreciated. Any grants still around for this sort of thing? I'm also thinking of possibly doing some hyroponics in one of our sheds so would tie in with that.
