Nelson or Penderyn Welsh sale?

Hoping someone with some knowledge of the Welsh ram sales might be able to help me. I’m going to be heading up to buy a few rams from either Nelson or Penderyn sale. I’ve only been to Nelson before, is there any difference between the 2 sales? I was told they’re both the same, if that’s the case, why is there 2 separate sales? Thanks

Nelson is all Ginger rams and Penderyn is both White face and Ginger rams . Depends what you are looking for.

Separate sales because they're separate auctioneers. Haven't been to Nelson for thirty years but back then they were proper ginger lions. Penderyn have two sections now I believe, one gingers and one for whiter types. A lot will be from the same vendors just parted into the right section. Talybont next Saturday will have some of each but not the extreme gingers.

I went to the Talybont sale quite a few years ago, seem to remember a lot of bigger framed white face rams? More Cheviot like? I could be wrong though. Slightly less hardy type maybe??

We go to talybont because that's the type of ewes we have. The Talybont "type" has changed over the years because breeders have mixed Cheviot and Glamorgans in to get a change of blood so there's a mix now. Some will just part out their more ginger ones and enter them for Penderyn

Quite a few people round here aren't buying Talybont types anymore as they're getting too big, not really proper hill sheep.
We were finding it hard to fatten tup lambs, needed a fair bit of feed, big lambs though. Cheviots are better.
Plenty of bearded tups still in Talybont though, 470 entered on Saturday, got a neighbour across the valley who sells some there, he reckons they will be cheap at the end as there are too many.

Penderyn ginger types are fair sized sheep though, a long time since we had any, can't remember them being particularly hardy here, but that was years ago when there were a lot more sheep on the hills

The rams I’ve bought out of Nelson definitely aren’t as hardy as the North Welsh rams I’ve been buying but the ewes are getting a little too small now so need some size adding.

When you say cheviots, I’m assuming Brecknocks? Cheviot types is a whole other can of worms I know very little about!

We've been buying some South country cheviots and lately more North Country hill types. The NCC hill have worked better for us, smaller sheep than Talybont types but seem to weigh like lead, we tup on the hill and the rams come in at scanning looking much better than the Talybont
Someone bought these three for us out of Lockerbie last year (2 are actually Welsh bred). I haven't got a v big budget, averaged about £400

Second picture is a couple of South country 5yr olds that we've just bought off a neighbour (originally out of Lockerbie)

If you drive from Penderyn to Brecon you’ll be able to tell the geology from the ewe type. They start ginger on the coal, get whiter on the limestone then get conks and cocky lugs as you get onto the old red sandstone.
