New shear grab

Hi, I'm looking at buying a shear grab to replace a tined silage grab that's getting past its best. I'm thinking Albutt 1.9 metre wide but not sure if just to go for the standard 3 ram hardox tine version or the higher capacity shear King mini. Going on a Manitou 630, so it's really a question of whether it would handle the bigger grab or not? We don't use a feed wagon at the minute, so everything is carted to where its fed in the grab, so carrying more at a time would be a bonus. Cheers

We put an Albutt 1.9m 3 ram standard tine on our 634, it's a great bit of kit. Only feeding 100 cows, into trailers and also some carting about farm. I wouldn't want something much heavier though.

We had a lots of 3 ram shear grabs all were trouble so we went back to a 2 ram Albutt hardox shear grab 3 or 4 years ago best one we have ever had so far.

Have a 3 ram with hardox. It’s 5 or 6 years old now and used lots with a housed herd.

All I will say is the rams are made of paper. I have a spare in the workshop. Hopefully they have improved them now. Plus point is we haven’t broken a tine yet.

3 ram albutt here i would second what Bg says about the rams, i think we have resealed all of them, but other than that a fine machine, hardox tines much better than standard.

Are you parking your grabs in a feed passage? Hardox tines aren't the easiest to slide grabs off compared to cranked KV tines and they add a bit of weight. We've a three ram Redrock here, have resealed one of the rams but apart from that been good.

Same here, not having a 3 ram again, the rams fight against each other somehow.

The problem with almost all attachments is they are often only rated at 210 or at best 250bar pressure.

The makes dont seem to realise modern handlers are often higher. Top spec Manitou's have been 275bar since 1999!

You need very good pipes rams and seals for 250bar +

(I have no idea what pressure albutt rate there's at as i not looked, but its something i have seen across several attachment manufactures over the years)

I've always wondered if hardox tines are harder to push into grass than cranked kv tines. I normally have to have 2 goes to get in far enough without hitting into it too hard if you know what I mean. Do hardox tines take more to push in
