New shed- all under one roof?

Thinking of putting up a new shed on a greenfield site.

The shed will be for housing up to about 800 sheep (about 300 ewe lambs and possible 500 ewes for a period) and possibly a few cattle just for calving.

My question is, should it be one big shed or a few smaller ones?

This will be near enough the only building on the farm.

Many thanks

The 'U' shape is fine, but that was for much smaller sheds in the old days; no need for a semi-sheltered yard now when the whole thing can be covered under a new build. But if you do choose that option - can't think why :scratchhead: - get the middle drained and concrete the lot.

Most importantly! No matter what you go for, make sure it's modular and that it can be extended without problems in the future (i.e. extend your planned earthworks to allow for easy add-ons (y)).

Big farmer near here on putting sheep shed up near 300ft x 80ft costing more than expected(200k alledgedly) to the point that it wont be fully finished this year. Will sheep profits pay back such a capital outlay?

One big one but make it substantially bigger than you think Cos it will never be big enough.

He might sell breeding stock and rams for 50k each. Ewe lambs for 200 each he might own farm with no debt he might have to pay 200 acre rent it’s a difficult question to answer
Then he can do the maths on that basis... Simple to work out cost of new shed per lamb produced

Cost of shed per lamb sold = Cost of shed ________________________________________________
Expected number or lambs to be produced from the shed over a period of say 20 years

Once you know that figure you can at least make an educated judgment call on its affordability... Ifs it is a figure of £40/lamb produced and you expect to produce £60 lambs it does look as wise as if costs £5/lamb but you are expecting to achieve £250/lamb sold

from memory once over 45 foot span lot bigger steel iis needed,
so if me, put up a shed 45' wide a good height to eves, with 30' lean to on each side, that would give good 100' wide and as long as you can afford, but do ground works now to extend more bays in future, be ok if you can utilise the poles down the middle , they could become a pia
I had the same when I started my thread, ever ones a citic , it's what works for the individual, every ones different, if I could more room I'd stick another up tomorra.
exactly everyone’s circumstances are different , these people who think no one can do things Cos they can’t and try to second guess other people’s financial situations are silly . No farmer ever said I wish I had not built that shed ! Every farmer including me says at some point I wish I had built that shed bigger or I wish I had another shed
