Thieves target farms in winter rural crime spree

Police and insurers are warning farmers to ramp up security over a spike in incidents of rural crime affecting farms and people living in the countryside.

Rural thieves are taking advantage of the bad weather and dark nights to mask their criminal activities.

In recent days, farmers have been posting reports and images on X, formerly Twitter, of their farms being raided by organised crime gangs.

James Peck, managing director of PX Farms, an agri business based just outside Cambridge, posted stills of a gang of four men breaking into one of his farms on 9 January.

The men were captured on CCTV driving out of a machinery shed in what appears to be a stolen Land Rover Evoque, which had its number plates covered.

Mr Peck said the men smashed open the electronic entry barrier to the farm, then sat watching near a hedge to see if they had been spotted.

They entered the farm in the Evoque about one-and-a-half hours later and broke into a shed, stealing thousands of pounds worth of hand tools and chainsaws. They were in and out in eight minutes, leaving the farm at about 12.40am on 10 January.

Mr Peck estimates it will cost about £4,000 to repair the damage caused.

This case shows what a waste of money and complete inappropriate use of their CCTV. At least 90-minutes, there criminals were able to damage property and gain entry with no response from anyone.

Do I help these guys, to prevent this from happening again? Or do I get accused of 'ambulance chasing'?

You just can't win sometimes! 🙂

Here, again, is some free advice.

Speaking of CCTV, this is an extract from my "Rural Security Handbook". Point one is the main and most important function of CCTV - and also the most overlooked and ignored. Even by CCTV sellers.
3.3.2.1. CCTV

With regards to CCTV, this is a very useful tool but is too often misunderstood or mis-sold and is not used appropriately or effectively. There is nothing worse than arriving at work, to find that you have been burgled and the ATV's, GPS' and other tools, equipment and vehicles have been stolen. While a member of your team has to ring round your clients, giving them the disappointing news that you can no longer deliver your products or services as promised, you sit and review the CCTV footage of the criminals getting away with your Assets. This is not an effective use of CCTV.

The functions of CCTV are:

i. Alert to the presence of suspicious activity
ii. Support the analysis of an alarm (is it correct or a false alarm?)
iii. Assist in the response of an incident (direct security staff or police to criminals’ location)
iv. Gather images to be used as evidence

If your CCTV is not informing you that something may be going wrong, at the exact time that it is possibly going wrong, then you’re CCTV is not reaching its maximum value.
Most people use CCTV for point four only, and this is not just wrong, but a waste of good money. If you're not using CCTV properly, you may as well hire a security guard, and buy him/her a nice comfy bed to sleep in.

You just can't win, in an industry that is just too stubborn and too arrogant to listen, but cantankerous enough to complain when something goes wrong. Yes, I know the response this comment will generate.
You can do what you want to help the ppl that are being attacked but untill there's a DETERRENT in this country to stop these scroats nothing will change because they CGAF and neither can the judges that give out such pathetic sentences ....
