NFU claiming credit for 25% SFI cap

Yes I'm thinking that's one potential argument. As is the one about protecting tenants.

But that hasn't been specifically said that is the reason, the reason is apparently to maintain food production "support"

Remember that Sunak has promised a UK food production/supply tracker to "ensure domestic production is maintained"

NFU is highly political and seems to be serving so many masters that it appears to be falling in to the gap in the middle

NFU don't understand basic anything. They are so far detatched from their supposed membership group that the membership have already left.
They exist in a world of their own imagination where they have importance and a say in national policy, a bit like us. :(

I'm still an NFU member and I think it's absolutely right that some of the SFI options are limited to 25%. So I guess, even though SFI doesn't directly effect me here, they are representing this member.👍

As @Henarar posted, with a limited pot, is it not better than is spread more thinly, rather than going to a small number of arable farmers that want to milk it and take their whole farms out of production? Or worse, landlords to kick their tenants off to put everything into legume fallow, etc.

The NFU may be happy with this small change but the system is fundamentally flawed. The whole thing has a dishonest base, net zero is a lie, and exporting food production isn’t in the national interest yet the NFU have excepted that warped logic. Personally I am still comfortable not paying a subscription.

  1. Seems sensible to ensure each farm has equal opportunities for the SFI payments.
  2. Food production/profit is a reasonable desire of a farming union. Food security isn't. That's government's domain.
  3. Farming unions should be aware that large areas of SFI means less food production... which could mean higher prices and higher margins. So no bad thing.
  4. Number "3" above. e.g. for grain gives us a ££ boost if we become net importers Vs net exporters, but means higher grain prices for livestock producers. But generally speaking, lower food production should mean higher prices.
  5. Although I stand by the line in number "1" above, DEFRA are now running a two tier SFI system for next 3 years. The opportunities for SFI support payments are unequal. This is unfair and wrong. It's totally DEFRA's mess up. Many grassland farms could have been waiting for the Autumn SFI updates before applying. DEFRA schoolboy incompetence. There was never any way they could manage their budget without a % or ££ cap. We told them. They didn't listen. Now it's a mess and has created an unequal playing field within England for SFI cash.

Or reduce supply, greatly increase imports ... which do not have the same checks & balances that UK production has.
Which then puts the UK at the mercy of exporting countries

Let's be honest. It was a clusterf*** by Defra from the off.
What did you expect?
If you think about it was it such a bad move ?
There is only so much money in the pot, would you rather it went to support a lot of farmers that are producing or support a few farmers that are not ?
I would rather it supported a lot of farmers while the produce.

So won't be going to rant at the NFU rep
But why 25% why not 25 acres for Instance because thats what a 100 acre farmer will have to make the best of so why shouldn't a 1k acre famer be made to stick to the same 25 .
As ever these things are biast against smaller famers when ghdbigedv one's don't need any encouragement anyway.

that's a good point...BUT ...if food security is an issue why remove all it's support and remove it to enviro schemes?
NFU should attack this and stop further reduction

Legume fallow (NUM3) is not included in the 25%

num3 doesn't pay enough to take a lot out of production
It pays better than landowner first charge and share of divisible surplus in a CFA agreement growing combinable crops with current commodity prices, risk and interest rates. I suggest many land providers would be better off for three year period sacking off their farm contractor and placing all land into NUM3 now the higher pay options AHL 1,2,3 have gone. Welcome alternative views and financials aspects.
