From an email received yesterday:
NFU Cymru has now applied to the Courts seeking permission for a Judicial Review of the Welsh Government’s decision to introduce new water quality regulations for the whole of Wales as of 1st April 2021.
Let us be in no doubt, these new regulations pose a significant threat to the economic viability of farming businesses. We are clear that an all-Wales NVZ is indiscriminate and punitive. It will affect every sector, every area of Wales and every farmer who will be subject to draconian record keeping, complex restrictions on the day-to-day running of their businesses and, for many, exorbitant costs. The strength of feeling over this regulation from not only farmers, but also from those thousands of businesses who rely on a productive farming sector, has been overwhelming and NFU Cymru is taking this decisive action on behalf of every one of them.
We remain of the view that government has little comprehension of the impacts of these regulations – a view supported by the inadequacy of their Regulatory Impact Assessment and the omission of the grassland derogation.
NFU Cymru is fully committed to looking after the environment but these regulations are not an effective way to do so.
Consequently, with support from our Legal Assistance Scheme and legal panel firm JCP Solicitors we have now applied to the Courts seeking permission for a Judicial Review.
We remain committed to challenging these damaging regulations and are pursuing every possible avenue in seeking to mitigate their harmful impact. We’ll leave no stone unturned.
Hopefully with the Senedd elections, Labour will get a bloody nose too.
