I would like to know what they are going to class as no til ! I know several no tillers who subsoil use harrows , light carrier type discs and still call claim they practice no till 🤷‍♂️ how will it be policed? . I could subsoil and follow with my combie drill and call my self a no tiller or even in the right conditions drill straight into stubble with a cultivator drill .

My issue with this is how do you rectify stuff in years like this, we have areas where water has stood for nearly 6 months now and will have to be lifted and i don;t mean a few bits I mean 15% before we go back in with the sabre tine

There's a farmer up here on the Downs that's been on min till for as long as I can remember, he's out ploughing every day ,it's either the wet weather or he's planting a lot of herbal leys

If I ploughed and combi-drilled to establish winter wheat in autumn 23, but then no-till drill a catch crop 10th August '24 after the wheat, then plough and combi drill some winter barley in same field 1st Oct '24..... will I be able to claim for a SFI no-till drill payment?

In the pilot they limited the operational depth which; despite being impossible to police; is probably the only way they could define ‘no till’ but I’m sure I’ve read LD subsoiling will be allowed.

The problem is the industry has used many methods and statements and they are all misleading. To be fully legal in a notill situation, you have to be careful with what chemicals you do apply etc and check the legal status of the following crops if entering for sfi cover/ catch crops etc. It really is a minefield and Tbh most chemical(herbicide) labels nearly need to be reworded to be fully legal with Sfi protocols.

% Previous crop stubble disturbance would be much better way

I can see that a drill such as a 750A , GD , Avatar, Sly/Horizon really don’t disturb much soil where something like a sabretine, Claydon, Mziuri , Amazon move quite a lot of soil but achieve the same result and still claim to be no til . I doubt there are many “ No tillers “ in this country that are not doing some sort of subsoiling of min tillage in front of their drills .
