no till

I heard that low disturbances subsoiling was going to be allowable. I've rung the RPA to try and find out the rules for direct drilling and weed recognition by camara and they have not been issued any rules yet. How are you supposed to plan for the next season?

In the pilot they limited the operational depth which; despite being impossible to police; is probably the only way they could define ‘no till’ but I’m sure I’ve read LD subsoiling will be allowed.

Over the border into Wales, I wasn’t allowed to DD ‘non-sprayed roots’ for Glastir (our enviro scheme at the time). I got it in writing that LD subsoiling was ok as ‘cultivating’, ahead of the direct drill.

Who am I to disagree?🤷‍♂️

But how would you police it ?

it’s something that could be measured in field if required, check % of plants roots still attached per m2 at several points

much easier than depth to police

imo what defines no till is minimal disturbance of root networks - how thats achieved isn’t important, it’s the result that matters

Interesting idea…apart from it will allow strip till through the net

They consider strip till drills as direct drills for the FETF grants so I assume they will for SFI
Do they?

I thought it specifically said strip till drills didn't qualify.

I'll have to have a read.

I know claydon got away with it by using a leading disc instead of a tine, obviously you can then fit a leading tine at home in place of the disc.

Thought so, a single tine is ok.
Strip till is specifically not allowed.
So dts, mzuri, standard claydon, not eligible.

I believe they have said the LD subsoiling will be allowed with evidence, and strip till allowed. basically no soil movement before drilling I think. they want to give us money why are people arguing against it? bps isn't coming back.
Because it makes a mockery to award those genuinely trying to farm by disturbing the ground the least while in the same breath awarding people dragging a small house around like the mzuri izone

I will not matter what method of No till you practice because the remote sensing data can see if too much soil has been moved and if in doubt they will just send a "Visitor" who will ask for evidence of the system used. £73 per Ha per annum is money for old rope so long as grassland and upland farmers can establish their crops and be paid too??

My two low disturbance drills are also the size of a small house and have big tractors dragging them.

If there are no roots still connected to a short or long stubble in fields then the Visitor will say NO £73..

depends on what % you set as the standard

strip tills drill can be set to disturb very little or equally it can be used as a cultivator - that’s why i don’t think the type of machine should be defined / the result should be the definition

even speed makes a difference - a tine low disturbance dd like our Vos Converted CO will disturb very little at circa 10kph - at 15kph plus it would become a cultivator though

SFI isn’t prescriptive so i very much doubt they will specify drill type but there will be a defined aim to disturb no more than X % i reckon
