Because it's a permeable surface on clay bed. Same idea as storing bales on hardcore, but if they're on concrete you'd have to collect it.

NB
Bedded on concrete, the straw will do literally half the time.

Last night out tonight.it has been a good grass year. Hope to graze during the day to Nov. Stopped sowing fert 1st Sept. Ten fifteen years ago I would of sown to the 23 Sept. See no difference
Same again next year only with a big grazing milk bonus for all my hard work

Why in at night if planning to have enough grass for 6 weeks during day?

Silo opened or bales?
I reckon we'll get to the middle of October at best, 2 weeks worth of strip grazing left, then a couple of weeks giving them a field a day....... if it stays dry.

Getting colder. If I put them in now they're only eating from one end of the loaf so should last longer
Fair enough, I'd rather them out day and night as long as possible to get grass red up while conditions are reasonable. Would help slurry storage to keep them out by day after 15th right enough.

An aged ash. Nice bit of firing when I get the time. Haven't had a tree down in about four years. Ancestors were a bit naughty and didn't leave too many around. I remember reading that Northern Ireland is one of the least forested parts of Europe.
