Does anybody treat the rates on their farm house as an expense when filing their tax returns? My accountant says not but I disagree as it’s also my office/sleeping quarters during calving season. Wonder did others claim it and get away with it.

Farm house rates, insurance, telephone and electric can be treated as business expenses when preparing farm accounts.

however you will not get 100% Tax relief on them. The accountant will adjust for this when doing tax return. Along with private use of motor car.

generally you should get tax relief on a third or quarter of rates and house insurance.

is your accountant a one man band?

Yes ,works solo.
Not happy with him for awhile now. Didn't put silage cutting in as expense one year.."an over sight. Sorry".

how on earth? If You paid by cheque/bank transfer! Only thing an accountant could miss possibly is a small cash payment that’s not recorded.

one thing I’d advise if leaving a one man band before he knows you are leaving ask for a set of accounts and copy of last tax return. Say it’s for the bank. Some aren’t members of any accountancy bodies and can make life difficult.

I heard today his wife is also very ill.
I for one am taking this very seriously until I know better what's happening.

Not enough people are taking it seriously, went through Ballymena to an out farm this morning, Tesco and Sainsbury's car parks were bunged at half 8. Plenty of cars/walkers and cyclists about at midday when I was on the way home.:banghead:
