Back then you could also buy good ground for 5000/ac. Nowadays round here it's 15000/ac. In balance though, we didn't get a sfp in those days, which is worth 3.5p/litre to the average dairy farmer. No point living in the past though.Back then though you would be spending a fair bit on buying or leasing quota which took afair whack of the milk cheque!
I read in the journal Ian McCluggage reckons another 1000 dairy farmers will quit in NI in the next decade whilst cow numbers will stay the same. On first impressions, I thought it sounded extreme. Then, when I thought about the men I know that have quit in the last year and the other men who are going to quit in the next few years, it didn't sound that far out.
