my 80 yr old mum lost her fat spaniel last week...she doesn't want another dog so we're thinking of a catšŸ˜.. we have sheep so toxoplasmosis wise what is the best to get?,,,neutered boy?
Nooh, go and get her a rescue dog. Tell her it needs TLC. Give her something to look after. Rescue a Whippet, they love being with people and clean coats too
We have a cat , but he'd be no good for an older person looking for company. He suits himself and spends most of his time in the hay.

Agree on the rescue dog but not so much a whippet. Whippet rescues in the UK have waiting lists at the moment (as do breeders), and while they do love being with people and look dainty they can be fierce hunters off-lead. Mine used to chase and herd deer back to me, presumably expecting me to bring it down so he could finish it off. I must have been such a disappointment to him.

Anyway, I'm not sure @spin cycle needs a speedy free-range assassin about the place as he has enough on his plate with his Norfolk Hurdlers. A fat older cat would be less hassle.

A rescue collie?

Company for mum, plus an assistant for spin?

[Edit to add: spin has plenty of rope to make a long lead so the dog can train him safely ;) ]

Get her a collie that's too old to run up and down fell sides but can still manage to 'do a bit' in a flat place like Narfuk.
It'll be a win/win situation - the Admiral can ride round in tha mule whistling 'come bye and away to me' in the day time and they can both put their feet up and watch the telly together at night šŸ‘
Hell, if you'd only asked this morning I'd have damn nearly given you my old 'un - got back to the truck after working the young dog and the bitch had stolen a packet and a half of Jaffa Cakes that I had stashed away on the back seat šŸ˜”

and speak to the Cinnamon Trust about help to care for dog.
