Has anyone got a Pickhill Bantam ( 180 amp) or Oxford so they could advise me how to rewire the mains in wires to use it again ..
If anyone has a wiring diagram or something  tia.

Post a photo of the pins in the box, they should be marked with numbers like 220/240, 380 etc. Earth wire be the middle pin that holds the lid on and neutral should be marked

got a pic i just want to be sure as i'm no technical electrician
will it simply be live on the 240 one, neutral on the 0 and earth in the middle ?

If you're on single phase 240v then put neutral wire to the 0 terminal, Live wire to the 240 terminal, earth to the central post which holds the lid on.

If you're on three phase, put one of the phases to 0 terminal and another phase to the 415 terminal, and again earth to the centre post.

NOTE that although it's termed three phase you're actually only using two of the phases on this job.

P.S. get a wire brush and clean the terminals up to make a good contact.

we had a oxford 180 on 3phase, it was quite happy with 4mm rods. mind you it's 14 yrs since i did any welding. on the output selector try turning down the voltage and upping the amps? or is my memory going. :)

that was on 180 amps and on the low volt setting.local blacksmiths had 2 oxfords wired together in tandem.. not sure if that meant together they were 360 amps  too long ago to remember

Good grief no! o_O
Those are only tappings on one side of the primary.

If its a 3-phase supply, just use one phase. 0 to 415 or 0 to 240 depending on supply voltage.
He's got it working on single phase 240 now anyway :) (y)

Alec.

Clearly different to the Oxfords then, how could you have a 415v supply that isn't 3 phase? Peak voltage is 440v for both single and 3 phase, just the RMS voltage that differs, 230 for single phase and 415 for 3 phase

Just use the "415" from across two phases of a conventional star or from across a high delta.
Lots of older welders, ie Pickhills, BOCs, Philips, Rowan-Arcs etc were "single phase" units and just used one of the phases from the three phase supply to power them.
You still got dedicated 3-phase units of course, some Pickhills, Oxfords, Quasi-Arcs etc.
Just got to be careful (y)
