At that moment Monty the spaniel dashes past, proudly carrying a stray beet in his mouth. “He’s a big fan of sugar beet,” laughs Gareth as he begins to explain how the business’ latest mechanical investment is helping them to continue growing the crop. “Watkins Contracting is now a partnership between my father and I, but dates back to 1952 when my grandfather purchased a small piece of kit which loosened sugar beet.
