Opinions on the "best" suckler cow

It's not really a good idea to creep feed heifer calves destined for breeding.
Are you increasing herd size by keeping so many heifers?

Yep I am indeed. Relatively slowly though. By the time I get rid of an odd older cow, usually because they are repeating or not cruising through winter. Cull the odd first or second calved that isn’t performing coupled with TB it’s slow progress.

I need to up my game a lot, we calve in about a 15 heifers per hundred cows while you're achieving half that replacement rate.

But generally avoided keeping many beyond 10 calves (11 to 12 years old) as calf weaning weight tends to reduce beyond that, although the odd one has gotten to stay into their teens.
That along with culling out bottom end performers and a few not going in calf tends to come to about 15% or 8yo, calving at 2yo

For us simmental seems to work well.crossed with AA,BB or lim.plenty of milk, good growth rates and usually good longevity. Would say 90% of our cows have simmy in them somewhere along the line.
