Optimum to sow rape

Still drilling osr here after spring barley. There is some moisture in the soil but flea beetle shot holing on emerging osr is evident even if not significant at the moment.

I know we should not go on last year’s outcomes but September drilled rape last year did ok and even the lower yielding ones will show a margin at current prices.

Other than drill or not drill, do we risk selling a bit forward to lock in a price beginning with a 4???
I'm going with the pool this year, admitting defeat in OSR marketing strategy :(

I’ve finished drilling osr today. 1st field direct drilled 10 days ago is just emerging all looks ok at the mo. I cultivated the field I drilled today, found some moisture for the seed so hopefully something will grow.

Impossible job this year. Finished combining Tuesday, then fields to clear before rain that hasn't come so grass seeding and osr drilling next on the list. I've chosen to try osr in the one year when everything needs doing at the same fecking time!🤪

Watching the chances of rain decrease. Tbh the grass land is so dry I darent go near it with a cultivator. I don't mind ripping rape up now - rather be on it on Monday and have it soloed, harrowed and rolled than be looking at a half crop all year.

What will you put back in instead of osr?

Wheat.

After this heat, and having put the osr in off s subsoiler, I'd expect it will turn into a seedbed pretty easy. Then, patiently wait for a rain for a decent chit of volunteers and wheat in mid October.

There are some good osr plants. But I'm less happy than my agronomist at a patchy, thin plant stand going into winter. This isn't grade 1 silt. I'll take thin, but not gappy. I've got plants at three leaves next to cotyledons.

It's s shame. One good rain would have made it a great crop.

I'd rather cut off my own toes; batter, fry, and serve them to myself for tea with a mint dip, decoratively plated on the naked body of my mother-in-law, than plant winter or spring beans.

😄😄 know what your saying…beans would be scooped off heap.
Having said that l’ve just got pee wet through walking the dogs so added to this am 5mm showers I reckon rape will make it🤞

Still nothing. It's a shame as in parts it's good. But once you realise the 24m headland of this field measures maybe 5ha, you don't need to nurse a poor crop through winter.

My children got soaked at 9am at school. Down the road got 10mm.
