OSR drilling

Given our yields from last year's rape I wouldn't pay much attention to what we're doing! Drilled 180ac of farm saved Elgar. Dressed with HY-PRO Duet and some nutrient dressing much to my annoyance. It has gone in really nicely with the Claydon though. DAP applied before the rain last week.

do you know what you have averaged this year yet ?

See my post in the OSR yields thread. Not quite sure because only half of the acreage has gone over a weighbridge and I still haven't calibrated the yield meter formally (although I know from the weighbridge that it's 10% over-reading and so have corrected for that). Not very good basically, although I'm hopeful that we might still be able to beat @dontknowanything - I'll then be able to put the figure on a mug and even out the mug giving tally.

Did a bit of Elgar yesterday, but conditions are a bit dry.Added 3kg/ha of Berseem clover to see if we can confuse the CSFB!

I'll be starting on Monday. I'd have gone sooner if I'd had the HSS test results back from NIAB before today.

Just because 2016 harvest osr did well on later sowings doesn't mean the same will be true every year. If I'm looking at knee high crop by November the pigeons won't have anywhere to land & the root system will be able to hold more N that would otherwise be leached out over winter IMHO.

It's easier to regulate a forward crop than make a backward one catch up. If you can get it in well, crack on. If you're grinding dry clods, give it a bit of time. This is Britain - It WILL rain eventually.

Drilling my 40 acres of Extrovert today, 2.5kg/ha into raked w barley stubble. Nice bit of moisture just under the surface. Should get going quickly hopefully, rolling a couple of hours behind the drill. 30 acres of Dariot to drill possibly Monday I think.

I will try here in Sweden on monday to get some OSR precisiondrilled, doing a bit of our own trials to compare it versus Rapid & Cultus drilled. I reckon the average yield this year was 3400-3500kg/ha, not far from here it was only 2000-2500 kg/ha so I'm quite happy.
@Clive How many acres of OSR are you growing?

Not started. Need to a) cut the wheat, b) bale the straw, c) get the seed. Aim to be done by 1st September.

'C' might prove increasingly difficult: Limagrain have sold out of Anastasia, due to poor seed crops in France. I'm guessing other varieties won't be far behind.

Hearing of some very low thousand grain weights on bags. It's bad enough in a normal year buying a quarter filled bag at 4+g tgw.

Wouldn't entertain buying an 'empty bag' of 3g sweepings, especially as seed size correlates with vigour.

Ordered the seed a few days ago. Always ask if a variety is ready for delivery, and specify it needs to be here in a certain timeframe.

Bit worried that we drilled it a bit deep, although that's where the moisture is. Not much sign of flea beetle damage on the cotyledons yet, and slugs looking not ridiculous at present. Famous last words.

On Thursday 26th September, we’re holding a webinar for farmers to go through the guidance, actions and detail for the expanded Sustainable Farming Incentive (SFI) offer. This was planned for end of May, but had to be delayed due to the general election. We apologise about that.

Farming and Countryside Programme Director, Janet Hughes will be joined by policy leads working on SFI, and colleagues from the Rural Payment Agency and Catchment Sensitive Farming.

This webinar will be...
