Environment Secretary, Theresa Villiers, speaking at Oxford Farming Conference 2020

After speaking at Oxford Farming Conference on Wednesday morning, an interview with the Environment Secretary featured in this morning’s Farming Today programme, where she discussed the government’s vision for the transition into a new farming system that would support farmers while also delivering on environmental goals.

There is further coverage today in Western Morning News, The Courier, Business Matters, Edie.net, Farm Ireland, Pig World , ENDS Report, Somerset County Gazette and the Northern Farmer, looking at the radical vision presented for future farming within the Environment Secretary’s speech as well as picking up on her comments made during the press conference and those of non-executive director, Henry Dimbleby, relating to his ongoing food review.

Natural Chair Tony Juniper has written in today’s Daily Telegraph about the vital role that farmers can and must play in saving our natural environment, praising the National Farmers’ Union commitment to reach net zero carbon emissions by 2040, which he claims shows that the farming sector is poised to be a driving force behind the change we need. With the new scheme a few years’ away, farmers can take advantage of existing Countryside Stewardship schemes and the future Environmental Land Management scheme, which will support them in embedding environmental improvements to their businesses.
