Paint the edges first.
Start swinging the paint gun before pulling the trigger, and let go of the trigger before stopping the swing.
Practise on somewhere you won't see first (underneath of bonnet).

Yes I have known many 600 series cabs fall apart, shame as was a good tractor.
theres your answer swap the bonnet off the 690 onto the 398!! if they fit? o_O

they might just fit n that would be a good idea, except cant see dad being too happy about it, they both good tractors but 398 is the best

preparation is the key, more time you spend cleaning and sanding, the better the finish, and idiot can wield a spray gun, but to get a good finish takes some practice, even a golden balls like myself hasnt mastered the dark art of it yet

tip for beginners though, heat the paint up so its nearly boiling, that way you need less thinners, so it wont want to run as much, pour it in spray gun and apply, soon as it hits the cooler metal it thickens up, and sticks like shite to a blanket, it wont be quite as shiny as its the thinners what give the shine to some extent, but it will be a smooth and uniform coat all the same

dust a light coat on first, let it go tacky, than another coat, then another, if you ave got that far with no runs, put another thinner coat over it to give it some shine

Just to give you some idea on quantity of paint needed, i used a litre to get a decent finish on the roof of my 15, and i only sparayed the outside of it too, to do all the red on a mf id say 5 litres easy, and maybe 3 litres of primer

what ratio of paint to thinners without the heating of the paint then John?
would you use a filler/ primmer first before top coat? wet n dry it between coats?

what about machinery, would you use red oxide first then a top coat?

anyone would think you are deliberately trying to catch me out here lol, but hey, ive only been spraying since i was 16...

red oxide onto the bare metal, 2 or 3 coats at least, flat it off then top coat.

if you get a run in the top coat, you need toi let it dry thouroughly, then flat the entire surface, not just the bit whats run, you cant spray top coat onto bright work, it must be flatted/sanded first

to be honest i cant tell you what ratio i use regards thinners as ive never measured it, i just pour it in and stir till it feels right,

also, different makes of paint require more/les thinners, so there is no hard and fast rule

ive heard of people putting varnish with it, never tried it myself, always wondered if it would react with the paint/thinners and make it curdle?

too much shine looks wrong on an old machine imo, id rather have a deep, lustre finish with plenty of colour to it than a thin highly shiney finish what wont stand up to as much wear and tear

What sort of spray gun do you use John?
