I’m thinking of trying a little bit of peas and barley. Do people put any n fert on and how easy is it to set the combine or do you have to put up with unthreshed barley in the tank

Go easy on the N. As you wont be using pgr.
Get as early a ripening SB variety as you can get and The key then is to be able to cut it just at the right time ie. Just as soon as the peas are ready , so you dont lose them from the pods need luck with the weather at that time of course as per...
But the peas still will be combiable , even if it goes down a bit, as the barley straw helps keep things moving on the header. It's not at all like trying to pick up peas on their own (and soil :cautious:) lodged flat on the deck :mad::)

I didnt find combine settings a problem at all, just set for barley , with concave not too tight . Just hope that the barley is fit enough that's all, I guess ive been lucky when j grew it probaly. To have got them both fit together , well at least fit enough for the barley not too take too much threshing. Anyway its nof wb is it.

It's a very satisfying way of growing peas I found, as you can harvest nicely and the straw is / is worthwhile as well.

read an article tears ago, where a farmer was growing maize, and runner beans. Sounded like a good idea, but every agromonist I have spoken to, say's NO. so haven't tried it, but sounds good.

Grew 16 acres of wheat and peas, a few years ago during my arable period! But I was combining and crimping the grain. Worked really well, plenty of muck and slag in the seedbed, not much fertiliser, a pre emergence herbicide . And that was it. Crimping or whole cropping would give you the timeliness to get a good reseed in. I baled and wrapped the straw, excellent feed for suckler cows, but a magnet for rats.

baled hay, with a lot of volunteer barley, thought it was a good idea, it wasn't, the speed with evert type of winged, and legged vermin, ripped the wrap off, was unbelievable, neighbour, and I couldn't keep up feeding it, as fast as they shredded it !

On Thursday 26th September, we’re holding a webinar for farmers to go through the guidance, actions and detail for the expanded Sustainable Farming Incentive (SFI) offer. This was planned for end of May, but had to be delayed due to the general election. We apologise about that.

Farming and Countryside Programme Director, Janet Hughes will be joined by policy leads working on SFI, and colleagues from the Rural Payment Agency and Catchment Sensitive Farming.

This webinar will be...
