Hi we are looking at bringing in 10/12 store cattle for this winter.
I am sorted for straw and silage.
we are looking for some form of storage for pellet mix that we can then load into a borrow to put into the troughs. Any cost effect ideas that are not hard work?
Thanks

Buy the pellets or meal in a half or one tonne bag, no bin cost and you can see exactly how much is left.

Remember seeing someone using spud boxes lined out with some plastic sheet, remember the more feed you have around the more rats you get . Also need to remember the best before date on feed particularly blends when feeding a smaller amount of stock

@agricontract had a bin in the last few days
I looked at them. About a quid a litre, so not really a viable option unless you need to move things or store them outside. For that number of cattle I'd be sticking a tonne tote in the corner and feeding out to the troughs with an old crystalix type bucket with a handle (MVF/ Harbro, etc.)

Thanks for the advice folks. Been speaking to local feed supplier and ton bags seems the best option to start out and get a scoop so easy to measure quantity etc.
they have 2 different mixes that are set up for store cattle so just need to sit down and work out the best option

Get your silage etc tested first then look at the mixes on offer.

See what the savings like with ton bags over 20kg sacks. If its not much you might be aswell buying it by the pallet load, theres always discount to be had buying 20kg sacks by the pallet or ton as well. The benefits being it's easy to feed out, they're waterproof ish, if rats get into one bag the whole lot won't spill out on the floor and if the cattle get out and find it they're less likely to gorge on it - they will knock the stack over, jump up and down on the bags and sh!t all over it but shouldn't kill themselves eating it!

A few words of caution if thinking of going down the bulk blown route.
Most companies minimum order is 3t, some now 5t!
Also many companies have stopped delivering into anything other than purpose built containers where the pipe can be fixed for filling. Anything where the driver is expected to hold the pipe ie potato boxes, IBCs or uncovered trailers, are a big no no!
If going homemade, remember to vent the container! Heard of several severe accidents where a container has exploded from the blower pressure.
