Perkins 1000 series engine oil in water.

On my Manitou 626 Turbo, there seems to be a lot of oil in the radiator now. The water pump looks like it's bolts on the timing case. Could it be the seal has gone and is letting oil through or the plate itself has perforated. Not dealt with this sort of water pump before.

I seem to have a lot more oil in the radiator since I replaced the missing plug in the rocker shaft, so maybe have increased the oil pressure a bit and worsened leak to rad.

I do think it's the transmission oil in the rad as it's very black not pink.

Don't think head gasket has gone as she's not blowing into rad but I suppose there is a chance of a head gasket oil leak to water without blowing gas.

It does have an engine oil cooler round the filter. So I'll need to bypass the water side round it and see if oil leaks out the water holes.

How does the water pump seal work - through the timing case?

It's coming up to 8000 hours. How long does pump seal last? Is replacement of pump seal a big job. Access to pump looks easy but not sure on timing case interface.

Good job we've still got the Sanderson. 1978 model.

You wont get the water pump apart in one piece. Its unlikely to be water pump if I'm honest. On the body of water pump they normally have two drain holes for when pump leaks. Its only splash feed oil anyway.
New pumps are not expensive.

Most common is the transmission cooler in rad. Assuming your on red atf trany fluid this normally goes pink in water. This only really leaves the engine oil cooler to leak.

Never sold one myself so dont know cost. Probably not maga money knowing perkins.

You going to join the coolant pipes going the cooler?

Bit of Aerial or any detergent in the radiator (mix it first)

Yes, if I can get at them I will join the coolant pipes together and see if we get oil out of the coolant pipe stubs on the oil cooler. Bit of a devil to get at down between engine and chassis - like everything on that machine.

Thanks for advice.

Best to flush out the radiator and watch it for oil.
The volume of oil coming out of the cooler might be hard to spot, it probably wont leak at all temperatures.

If you think that your old girl is hard to work on try trading it in for a new one! You'll soon change your mind!

I thought all those "new loaders" had pull out engine/transmissions modules, hinged for convenience?

I wish! Manitou engine pod comes off quite easy if needed but to be honest I not found a need yet:rolleyes: its easier to do any repairs with the pod on or take engine out of pod.

Transmission access on the newer manitous has got very poor imo:( and so have some of the hyd pipes on spool block. Merc engine bay is very cramped but starter motors in a better place:D
