Hi i have a massey ferg 50A backhoe put new liners pistons and valves in , had injectors overhauled, injector pump is a new bepco unit only done about 30 hours removed all gears and checked for cracks someone has put punch marks on gears ignored those and went by 2 straight lines on wheels used electric car fuel pump to bleed system got tdc on compression stroke to time engine but it wont fire ,using starting fluid it will keep running as long as you spray two things that bother me is the spurt of fuel out of the injector pipe is only about half an inch long, should it be stronger and when you take the small plate of injector pump where should the C line inside the pump Cheers Ted

Just in case, When you fitted the pump onto the gear, did you line up the peg with the hole? Pump will fit in three positions!!

Punchmarks look original to me, have you tried lining them up? Just whip the idler off to re time? Did it turn over by hand ok?

As @Mur Huwcun says....

Also the timing marks are pops and lines
You look and marks will be on a tooth and in-between a tooth
You line the on a tooth to the in-between tooth

If you turn the engine over there is a mark in the flywheel that relates to tdc
Then side off fuel pump there should a mark or letter that lines up with the end of the circlip
Not sure what marking is in your bepco pump though (n)

When timed up properly the circlip behind the window in the side of the fi pump should line up with one of the timing marks (which denote the outlet port). Theres another way of setting the timing using the pump model number/setting code which will give you piston travel btdc but better the other way as it involves dropping a valve on the piston.

If you set the timing marks right then it shouldn't be far out. I will post a picture of the tool used for scribing an accurate mark on the pump and timing case when no1 piston is at tdc compression stroke. This is marked on the rear of the flywheel and a pointer is visible thro the bung on the lh rear of the block.

Afaik the 'C' will not and shouldn't line up on TDC. The Flywheel needs to be turned to the spill timing mark for this, 22 degrees before TDC on 4.212. Then turn the pump body on its mountings until the 'C' lines up with the circlip

Looking again your idler gear has been mismarked? and the 2 dots on idler will meet on the 2 dots on cam gear?
I don't remember seeing those scribe lines, so I looked up a manual and it doesn't mention them

Are you sure its a 4.212 and not a later engine? Because that would explain the straight scribe line's on the gears, 4.236 or 4.248? And those would be timed differently

perhaps needs to get the engine SN and check to make sure,as if all the gear timing marks are lined up correctly and the scribe line on the pump flange is in line with the timing cover mark its done and dusted can fine tune on the pump rotor but should be right and good to go.

And the idler gear will have an additional tooth (a hunting tooth) to reduce wear, so it will only line up correctly in ONE position.
You will have to use the genuine pop marks I'm afraid ............
