don’t agree with landowners getting a single £ of taxpayer cash for anything ……. anyone wealthy enough to own land does not need state benefits / welfare payments

BUT - i do think the more land that comes out of production the less competition I have …….. i don’t care about feeding the world as much as I do my own farm profitably

With an ‘I’m alright Jack’ attitude like that, are you sure you haven’t rejoined the NFU? ;)

You’d happily see thousands of your fellow farmers forced out of business because they haven’t had the benefit of a bit of road money?

Let's presume it's grassland that gets swallowed up into trees and rewinding. That's less demand for feed grain (although it's probably hill sheep ground?).

But agree the more area down to mid-tier on arable ground = less supply of grain, so maybe net importers more often = increased prices.

Friend of mine works at Vivergo. They've spent last 2-3 years ironing out all the things that slow the plant down. Anti- blockage systems, faster x, more efficient y, etc. Should shift some serious grain when they get running.

I think the problem is, when there are less farmers, the critical mass may be lost that is needed for the infrastructure, without even thinking of the knock on effect in the rural community (builders, machinery dealers etc).

There is still time to avoid a catastrophe if only the folk at the top would listen or be replaced with more pragmatic people.
Brexit is done. It’s not Brexit per se that is causing the problem. It’s our ministers. With a bit of compromise a much better plan could be devised. Tenants should be the focus of assistance measures. Landowners don’t need subs. We can sell up and retire if needs be.
I remember going to some sort of a farming advice meeting, and the speaker said that tenant farmers are the most efficient farmers out there.

why are we so worried about everyone else all the time ? why do we worry about how everyone will get fed etc ? these are not OUR problems, our focus should be OUR businesses and not everyone else's - why should I care if the landowners around here re wild or not ? It their land and they can do as they please wit it ........... as a tax payer however I object ti my money being used to support already wealthy individuals and organisations however

Farmers spend far to much time concerning themselves with other peoples business IMO

they are the ONLY farmers out there

Farming is a trade
Landownership is an investment

All farmers are effectively tenants even if they also happen to be wealthy enough to be investors in land as well - as investors they need a ROI equivalent to commercial rent or are subsidising their trade with investment income = stupidity (or tax evasion !)

I see things differently. Less produce means less processing capacity and that capacity will be in fewer hands - ultimately bad for the producer. Whilst I have one eye on my stock the other has to be on the destination and customer of what I produce. We all have to make a profit. Would you be happy for your land lord take the land you farm into landscape recovery?

And a planning permission subsidy or two

What about landowners who haven't paid for the land let due to massive loan?

On Thursday 26th September, we’re holding a webinar for farmers to go through the guidance, actions and detail for the expanded Sustainable Farming Incentive (SFI) offer. This was planned for end of May, but had to be delayed due to the general election. We apologise about that.

Farming and Countryside Programme Director, Janet Hughes will be joined by policy leads working on SFI, and colleagues from the Rural Payment Agency and Catchment Sensitive Farming.

This webinar will be...
