Pick-up hitch pivot pin

I'm hoping someone can give me a tip on how to sort this. We lost this pin out of our Claas Arion 610 pick up assembly. Today we fetched a new one and we need to get rings onto the pin to sit in a groove at either end. The ring is not completely joined but is made of strong sprung steel. So far we are completely failing to get it onto the pin! Does anyone have any tips on how to do it?

Is it one of those 'where the f**k did that go' C shaped clips with 3 lugs that fit in the groove. Just needs hit on from the middle. Cover in a dusters before hitting to stop it launching itself across the workshop never to be found again!

Socket or tube to just fit over the pin (assuming has a chamfer on the end?). Put clip on end of pin then socket. Bash socket with hammer to stretch the clip over end of pin & into groove. Do it in a plastic bag to catch the C clip if you miss.
Alternative method (again in plastic bag!) Put one end of C clip into groove. Clamp in place with Mole grips. Wind the rest of the C clip into place either by using pliers, or carefully wangling with screwdriver & or hammer

They're called jesus clips around here, because that what you normally say as they graze past the end of your nose and fly across the workshop, never to be seen again ;)
