The welfare hasnt really got anything to do with wyke farms/good energy, shame to drag them into it, all they do is import sone of their slurry.

Also - that's not how animals normally look on slats, very poor conditions there.

Hows this different from any other slats pig unit?

Anyone commentating worked on an indoor unit?

The trespassing terrorists who shot the video did so at night. The animals are not kept in darkness 24hrs a day. The animals will have been checked twice in the working day and the dead stock will be found and removed the next morning.
Is there a farm in the country where rats couldn't be found at night?

The conditions appear to be in line with current regulations. If people want cheap pork, this is the way it is produced.

But surely that's why exposure likethis is needed?
Hardly anyone cared about free range eggs until that unroar years ago. People don't know this is how their pork is raised

Just blame the consumer or the supermarkets if you dont like this style of farming..... as the reason people farm like that is because it is price driven.

The consumer needs to waken up to the fact that quality meat reared in a more amiable way costs money. So next time they buy 2 for 1 on tesco cheap sh!t range, they should expect this style of production......simple

As an arable man, I think slats should be banned, more straw required then, :D

But honestly, I'd never consider keeping any animal on slats. I'd not want to lie on hard ground to sleep.
We have a duty of care to the animals, they can't choose where to go lie on slats, bet they'd go lie on a nice straw yard if given the choice.

And trespassing terrorists? Eh? Come on now.

They certainly weren't invited to film on the farm, so they're trespassing. I should think that the farm will have been secured, and they will have had to use force to gain access.

But make no mistake these individuals are merely a different side of the same coin as those who firebomb homes/labs release mink and desecrate graves.

regardless of where the slurry goes, horrible conditions. how can anyone live with themselves being a part of that?

I worked on a 1200 sow indoor unit doing birth to bacon. I was a stockman in the farrowing house. I took pride in my work and in producing high quality high welfare weaners for the growers part of the operation.

I know where you're coming from but to be fair there's been a fair bit of research done in Ireland with cattle for slats vs rubber slats vs slats. They found that there is very little difference between the 3 systems in terms of performance and animal behaviour. Straw is so expensive in Ireland that it would increase the cost of production considerably if we all were using it. I think we'd probably run out pretty quick too!

Just seen this via a link on Twitter (unfortunately there is a 'vegan propaganda' message on the video, but please have a look anyway). Comments anyone?

Tenuous, shocking journalism attempting to discredit green energy?

There's is a thread on this already from a couple of days ago iirc.

On Thursday 26th September, we’re holding a webinar for farmers to go through the guidance, actions and detail for the expanded Sustainable Farming Incentive (SFI) offer. This was planned for end of May, but had to be delayed due to the general election. We apologise about that.
