Plough school day

from comments at our ploughing day have Been asked if we could have a training day , we have some land available to do it . Looking for a ploughman who would come one weekend to pass on the knowledge , there is room for two ploughs to run . Full dinner and b@b for instructor will be open to any one but youngsters will have first chance and a healthy donation to heart or air ambulance charity.

I would be willing to help but past experience has thrown up certain requirements. Ploughs must have all parts in good working order and all adjustments free. The ploughman should be equipped with proper spanners (not adjustable) to fit all adjustments and aset of at least three sighting poles.Tractor wheels should be correctly set for the width of ploughing. As a guide the inside of the front and rear tyres should be in line(not centres). For 10" ploughing the width between tyres should be as near as possible 42", for 11" work 46" and 12" 50". Because there is a vast difference between trailer, mounted , reversible and even Ferguson ploughing it would be advisable to sign up the right teachers.
Sorry to sound dictatorial but I have experienced occasions where people turn up unprepared and never get the plough in the ground. If anyone wishes to contact me and ask advice I will be pleased to help. You have my contact details.

you have offered to help, and only room for 2 ploughs, why can you not take your outfit, tractor and plough, and use it for training

No problem and would make life much simpler but I do understand that people like to learn how to use their own plough.

I am quite happy to use my outfit and that would simplify things.

On Thursday 26th September, we’re holding a webinar for farmers to go through the guidance, actions and detail for the expanded Sustainable Farming Incentive (SFI) offer. This was planned for end of May, but had to be delayed due to the general election. We apologise about that.

Farming and Countryside Programme Director, Janet Hughes will be joined by policy leads working on SFI, and colleagues from the Rural Payment Agency and Catchment Sensitive Farming.
