welding the output pto stub on the gear that went to the mower bed gear.

using 312 rods
old bit of pto shaft slid on

those holes were for the bolts /set screws into the mower bed.

I take it that the mower bed is gearing up the pto speed to match the motors original speed?
Yes, the motor is rated at 1380 rpm i believe. i will use it on 750 or 1000 pto gear and have a tacho to check the shaft speed but i don't think that needs to be exact and it used to be a too powerful for washing vehicles iirc.

with regards the motor turning into a generator What would be the best way of stopping it from generating electric? ie to make it the safest.
the wires re easily disconnected / removed .

Have the magnets out.

Easiest way would be to remove the shaft and cut or press the rotor off the shaft and reinstall
you could cut it off without removing the bearings.
Or remove the stator assembly. See pic below.

The magnets moving will induct a charge into the coil. Whether it discharges through the correct tappings at the correct current, as when it is working properly, is not relevant to safety, especially in a very wet operating environment.

If the motor wasn’t working anyhow,why is it suddenly going to generate electric?
It was working when last used but that was some time ago and i didnt try it on electric before i started this, but i assume it would still work ok apart from being damp etc.

I very much doubt you would get any electric power out unless the motor is given a flash when being driven, however to be on the safe side just short all wires out as it decays any build up, I use slave a motor to help generate a 415V truer three phase supply from 250V single phase step up transformer, if the slave is left running without a load drain on from other electrical equipment other than just warning lights, if the supply power is then switched off just for a second or two they will stay on until the slave motor slows, so if a 415 volt motor being driven long enough its possible you might get good belt from it way above the motors voltage if not shorted out,
