Protecting welding wire.

Any ideas on protecting mig wire from corrosion, without having to take it off the welder every-time you use it? Has a habit of going pimply if left an it gets damps.

I WD-40 mine, blowing off any excess with the compressor before use so it does not slip in the wheels or contaminate the weld. It was invented to keep unprotected bits of space rockets from corroding, I beileve?

Between the reel and the rollers, Wrap a piece of wire wool around the wire and clamp with something like a clipboard clip, this will remove any rust before the wire goes thru the welder.

If not using the welder for a while (I.e. lambing) I remove the reel and put it (plus other size reels and ark rods) down the side of the rayburn.

thow away rubber ear plugs make good cleaner of wire, just push wire through middle before the rollers, protects the liner from dirt.
as said small bulb keeps wire dry, or you could use it more !

One of my 1st migs had no cover over the reel,I fastened a mineral bucket lid to the back of the reel mount then cut a slot in the bucket and encased the real.(y) was never a problem after.

Sounds good we run two migs its just we have moved workshops an its a bit damp in there at the moment. Had thought about lining the inside of the spool housing with bubble-wrap to insulate it a bit. Do you put the light inside the spool cover?

I find ours doesn't corrode a lot it just gets rust pimples on it which makes it drag in the liner might give the wire wool trick a go.

I have left a 5kg roll on my welder for 6 months or more unused and the wire is just as I left it, if the wire inside the welder rusts I dread to think what happens to the tools left out!

Ahh! But was the wire rusted when you left it? :)
