Protecting wheel motor pipes on an SP sprayer.

How do other breeds of sprayer protect their hydro pipes from rubbing on steering axles ? On our Househam they are fed through lay flat hose and is good for a while, but there always becomes places where they rub on mudguard brackets or the keepers and although it is a cheap fix to renew the hose, it is a messy job having to undo all the pipes to that wheel, and feed them through. I was going to go to LAMMA to spy on the competitions design but am now unable to go.

Spiral wrap is one way to protect your hyd hoses. The other thing you could look at is to re-route them if possible. Some brands of hyd hoses are better than others.

There has been the plastic spiral on all of our previous Househams as Jim says, but they tend to go brittle and break or rub apart where there is friction. I have never seen the metal spiral so will be trying a length, thanks for the heads up Goweresque. As for reroute , Househam have tried different ways over the years and have settled on this way although I recon there should be a way of keeping the pipes static by putting in a swivel fitting to take the movement, but I am sure they know best.

They probably don't use swivel fittings due to cost.

I hate the spiral wraps. On telehandlers and sprayers where the pipes are moving a lot, they seem to cut into the outer layer of rubber on the hose allowing water to corrode the wires and causing early failure.

My recommendation would be to remove all the covering and strap the pipes together with a heavy cable tie at the place where they move least. You are never going to avoid chafing on some machines, but at least with the covering gone, inspection is easy and replacement of a single pipe much easier.

Ive always re routed mine if possible and sleeved them at the points they may rub with reinforced pipe (same as the suction pipe) and cable tied them. Does wear over time but a cheaper repair than a hyd pipe.

We haven’t got a sprayer but on other equipment where hoses wear or are vulnerable we wrap with plastic spiral first and then put on a section of lay flat hose over the top cable tied at intervals. We also use a hole punch to put drainage holes in at the lowest points. The double protection works well and is cheap to replace when needed
