Quality of replacement parts?

Quick question. Our old 135 is getting the engine rebuilt.

The original clutch sometimes drags and it wont come out of gear. This can be a real pain at times as it can go through a spell of this then be fine. Apart from that it works

Wondering what like the quality of parts are from some of the online part companies. Wont name names.

Kinda concerned about replacing made in bannerlane with made in god knows where.

Doing the engine as i have no choice.

Tractor is still used for work so not just for show.

Thanks

Not great in my opinion. I’ve had problems with swarf still left in bores, poor finishes etc.
A good fitter should be able to make good a lot of the problems, so they shouldn’t be too bad. I would wonder too about where MF OEM parts were made too now.
My advice would be to use all the parts from one aftermarket manufacturer (we hope), they should have been worked out to work together in the block and don’t skimp on replacement parts, as any slight wear will exacerbate any problems that may be encountered.

Genuine parts for them are easy to get and not expensive. Have you priced them up .i once put a cheap clutch kit in a 2640 and it wouldn’t disengage no matter what we did. After wasting a day . I took it out and got my money back.and fitted a genuine one and it worked straight away

Do agco still do pistons and liners for them?

I have used sparex to rebuild a 236 engine and would use them .
As farm engineer commented I flushed crank oil ways and got dwarf out but apart from that parts fitted well , were cheap enough and engine runs great

I had this issue 5-6 years back and I believe asked on here. Many said parts were poor and even genuine parts may be cheap copies bought in but with an added price premium.

In the end I used mostly Agriline parts and on the whole they were pretty much spot on. Not quite the same quality as original, but I’d question if (m)any are.

Unsure if I’d use them for engine parts though.

@REStracTORATION might have a contact or two.

I’ve had the Old 20 parts company for a Fordson radiator recently and they were competitively priced and could even supply a copper radiator like the original. I was impressed at that so they may be worth a shot.

Thanks for that. Our 135 has been here since new and has almost never put a foot wrong. Sacrilege putting made in china engine parts in her.

Assuming new pistons would have been available from Perkins at some point given the popularity of the engine?

I have done a 35 not long ago, and used Bepco liners/pistons and were fine re fit/finish, I use Bepco stuff in all my Fergies as well, never had an issue with it. I did one with and Agriline kit and wasnt that impressed with it to be fair, their gaskets too are horrendous (certainly on Fergies)
I even bought a new cylinder head for the 35 as by the time I had it faced, guides done and valve seats re-cut it was cheaper for me to buy a new head. Had no issues at all with it, fitted spot on, starts and runs fine. machining looked good quality too. Got a 35X Multi Power to do next (if I ever have time) and will use the same kit in that.
re clutch I suspect it's oil on the plate or plates. I just replaced the pressure plate and clutch plates on mine, did all the seals when the engine was apart, you'll ideally need the clutch alining tool for the twin plates but you can get by using various sized sockets bolted together (bit of a bodge but it worked)
I guess a lot of this stuff is made in India but actually some of it seems ok, I have certainly not had issues with any of the stuff I bought and fitted.
They are a lovely little engine and very simple to rebuild but are a fair old lump to have on the workbench! I got my block machined to take the thick stepped liners as the thin ones do have a habit of breaking the step off and the piston then pulls the rest of the liner down into the crank, creating a bit of a mess.

Engine kits I've not really had any issues with I use them all but each supplier does have for example better fitting gaskets compared to others

The clutch
Fit a luk one they are dear but so much softer to press the cheap ones will spoil the tractor

I thought Genuine Massey Parts for classics were Sparex, I may be wrong though.

Bepco, Sparex, Agriline and the like do not offer genuine parts - in the main they are 'pattern parts' and use the MF / Agco / Perkins numbers for 'reference only'. In a past life - pre internet - we use to export a lot, and I mean a lot, of 'massey' parts. We specialised in hunting down generally but not always Black Country manufacturers supplying in to Agco but had redundant tooling that we brought back into life to provide parts for 240s, 260, 265, 390 etc and backwards not forwards. So much of this stuff had grown out of the 35, 135 and even back to the T20s. Some manufacturers were happy to supply if they either no longer supplied the items into banner lane or peterborough; others could not help as Agco had paid for the tooling and the items were specific to them.

The internet killed the trade. Our export market started cherry picking the difficult parts from us but the Timken, Ina, RHP, Glacier, FedMog bearings for hubs, steering, waterpumps and Donaldson filters etc began to be sourced as copies from India, South America and Eastern Europe. Romanian and Russian and sometimes Polish bearings flooded that market and the clients bought them in their thousands purely to satisfy the race to the bottom cost wise and to compete with the likes of Tafe, ITMCO etc.

I regret to say that many of those spare parts are still sourced from Indian subcontractors. Some are ok, some appalling. Turkey's not bad for quality now and the likes of INA and Koyo have bearing plants in Eastern Europe. Many of the Birmingham or Peterborough based small firms supplying Agco kit have gone now; small family, 'back street' (in the nicest way) operations are no more. Many got out when Banner Lane closed and Beauvais and Ursus took over.

I tell you one thing though, pick up a UK part, pick up a micrometer and a Massey drawing, many signed off by Harry Ferguson himself and that component would be bang on mid-limit. Not up, not down, bang-on. Banner Lane's inspection department in the 'good old days' took cr*p from no-one
