Farmers say the NFU is just a talking shop....what's this forum if it isn't just a talking shop?

Had a text from a friend saying there are two open meetings in Devon next week that Minette. Is attending . I am sure anyone , like @ Jerry , could attend and ask any question they like?
How open is open?
Most meetings are stage managed even though they are advertised as open. I will be very surprised if you don't have to submit your questions first. !
I agree the CLA and the TFA are equally useless .
Same old thing as once members reach towards the top of the organisation they forget where they have come from and who put them there and what they should be doing. It then becomes 'what do I need to do to get a gong' issue for them and fighting the Govt is obviously not the thing to do.

I haven't spoken to Minette about this thread. She is more than capable of handling Q&As in meetings without prepping for me. I'm not aware of her reading TFF much.

Office holders, staff and and other positions such as Sector board chairs hold dozens of meetings like this. In my experience they are not stage managed, we are not shrinking violets frightened of what questions we may be asked, in fact I like members to speak their mind. I would be horrified if I heard someone had been told they were not to raise a certain point or question, if I did hear that I'd insist it was given airtime.

I really couldnt give a tinkers about gongs.

The NFU doesn't represent farmers in Scotland. That's the NFUS.

NFU membership is increasing.

Thanks for the comment Guy. I’m looking forward to the meeting and meeting Minette.

I will put forward some of the questions here for certain as they mirror some of my own that I would like to hear her views on.

As said I’m not a member and don’t see that changing at the moment but I want here it direct on these issues I have.

Any meetings can look that way for 2 reasons.
1. To prevent awkward silences there will be some stock questions to be asked by individuals, i.e. vice chair etc.
2. Some people, like Jerry , will come armed with question on behalf of others. These will look like they are "hogging" the questions or it being stage managed.

With regard to my post earlier, is the next gen group going to be rolled out at regional/county level? I think it could be key in future.

Thanks for gracing us with your presence at the tillage conferebce Guy, great contribution even if the playing field is always skewed. Couldnt really decide if i was listening to the future of the NFU or its greatest missed chance, either way your attendance was well appriecated .

Good to meet you in your green patch. I had a good but too short time in Kilkenny. Good, well attended conference with good questions - even the one about Wexford’s hurling performance!
