Combines are very expensive and also spend most of the year doing nothing but taking up barn space. Its that 1% of the time that justifies the cost. While your twisting the gaffers arm into getting/making one, I'd recommend not skimping on the size, give yourself plenty of space to work in.
I totally agree but you can see why people don't bother

i am currently in the finishing stages of making a link box for transporting calves etc and have made it to be a man platform as well just need to decide whether to put handler brackets on it or make up a frame for handler that will also pick up A frame stuff

A man basket is much cheaper than the HSE fine. So much better to work out of than a bucket and safer than a ladder, ours has paid for itself many times over.

I reluctantly bought a basket after strong advise from the nfu, we use it more than I expected and you certainly feel safer in it , its smaller than a grain bucket but in reality its just as big as you can safely lean over the sides.
the biggest difference is the non slip floor compared to a shiney grain bucket. previously we also used a potato box bolted to the tines that was ok not legal apparently ( esp not our old semi rotten box).

the main times you notice benefits of a basket are power washing the inside roofs of poultry sheds and chain sawing at height. both jobs i know wonder why I ever stood in a grain bucket to do them

A neighbour built a bolt on safety rail for his bucket, neat idea

We got a man cage couple years ago after the link box floor rotted through.:LOL: And is great for chain sawing cleaning gutters, shed building. But isn't so good when working on roofs(repairing) we've an old barton farmyard which is all slates and lose several a year, cage gets complaints cause you open the door(on the side) to get on the roof there's nothing below, whereas a bucket you can run up and down and know the bucket is there to catch you! The builder that does that sort of work now always grumbles when we turn up with the cage.
