Match work is usually at 6"-8" deep and using the same ratio amounts to 1.5-2" for the skimmer. This puts it in perspective perhaps. My Bomford Unchockable book says skim at 3" for 12" depth.

It has to be removed but normally only causes trouble for those who can`t set skimmers. ie in contact with the disc, particularly towards the point and the skimmer angle (sweep back) to emulate that of the mouldboard as far as possible to assist flow. Skimmers to be sharp and shiny and the point level with or just in front of the share point. I have seen people this season with skimmers set to emulate the action of a dozer blade, rolling up large amounts of debris until this escapes to the furrow bottom in a big lump. The result is that some of it is not buried and it props open the furrow slice. On grassland the skimming must produce a triangular section ribbon, completely separated from the furrow slice and far enough forward to allow it to roll off the rising furrow slice into the bottom of the furrow in good time.To recap, the trash on the left-hand top corner of the furrow slice going needs to be removed. Traditionally it goes to the right (and gives grief) yet there is room on the left when the next body can turn it under.
