Rear mounted mowers

Whats your thoughts on storing a 10ft l
3point linkage mower on its upright stands out of season- Damage the top bearings with not being submerged in the oil ?

I was just curious as a rep from a leading manufacturer stated to a buyer that upright storage stands were bad for the bearings ! Maybe his stands were a poor design ?
General rule of thumb is if it comes with manufacturer vertical storage stands then it should be o.k to store vertically.
Unless the rep knows something else & wasn't letting on

I remember people saying that on early designs of disc mowers the bearings didn't last long on hilly farms because when they were crossing slopes the top end of the bed would run dry. Never see a problem these days

Nonsense. When running at full speed the oil will be spread across the entire cutter bar
Don't shoot the messenger! Talking about the light disc mowers that replaced finger bars. Maybe they were just sh!te but they didn't last long around here, always end bearings gone, parked in a ditch and replaced by a drum. Nowadays everyone has discs without issues

I don't see a problem unless there's moisture inside the bed, which obviously shouldn't be the case.
Does the oil in these beds need changed every year? If so change it after the last field of the year, give it a run and then you’ll know it’s all coated in fresh oil.

Exactly. I’ve always been under the impression the oil turns pretty much to foam and fills the whole bed
Just to clarify my comment. If you store a disc mower vertically or over centre type I’d always unfold it and let it sit for say 30 mins if the ambient temp is above say 15 degrees then start up slowly at first to deploy the oil around the entire bed

There will be a given time period by manufacturer.
Personally I would change it mid season and again at the end. It’s only £10 of oil and half hour job.
plus you can learn a lot about the condition of the bed by what comes out. Any sign of glitter and it’s time to investigate further. You might just save it’s life
