Are there fuel additives which will stop algae forming ,in the fuel tanks of tractors and machinery that is used infrequently?
I would very much like to hear how any of you get on with the Diesel additives, if you use them in your classic tractor diesel tanks,to stop algae.

We have a Leyland that only runs the drier, best starter on the farm and never needed any additives. The older they are the less likely they will have problems with diesel in my opinion, so long as they get through at least a tank each year so it's not sat in them too long.

I have also heard that the algae etc is more of a problem in newer tractors, more so than my Ford 3910h, MF 390 and 6290.

Excuse me asking but what is the trade name of the additives you use, many thanks.
Now you’re asking as the bottles are in the shed. I think the anti wax could be Excocet ? Or something like that, and the anti bug is from the same people I believe.
Picked the last lot up at a trade show, but usually pop into local JD dealer.

Exocet are based near Shrewsbury and had a stand at the Lamma show. Callow fuels sell there products. I use anti wax if summer grade left in tank overwinter but have used the anti bug for several years now, added as fuel tank filled.

I have not had cause to use use them myself until now. I drew some red off from our last delivery to take to a tractor and it looked different, not so bright, clear. I asked the supplier about it and it is because of, F.A.M.E. content - bio-diesel.

They said,"If used quickly and good storage practices observed,it should not be a problem. If, on the other hand, it is left for a long period, sat outside in a single skin tank where condensation can occur, then be very careful.

Practical Boat Owner, September 2016, ran some tests on these additives, worth a read, Angus.

Any update on this old thread.
I use this in combine. Make sure I put some in on every fill up and give it a shock dose at start of harvest.

I use something which is either called Starbrite or Startron, can't remember which. I only put in machines that don't get much use. I haven't had any trouble yet so I suppose it works. Cost about £65 last time I bought some.
