Reekie 5254 S Destoner problem

Good Evening, I have a Reekie 5254 S destoner and I am having trouble with the front paddle rotor. As soon as it is lowered to working in the soil it stops and makes a banging noise. To get round this I have raised the rotor to the maximum height to continue with work. As a result I lose soil out the front (sides) as the rotor is not feeding soil up the machine. I have had a look at the drive from the front and looked at slip clutch cant see anything obvious. Any ideas much appreciated.

Be slip clutch or the drive.

Is it belt drive or chain? We converted ours to chain as the belts gave a lot of bother and are expensive. Check the bearings both on the paddle and on the drive, if one of them is gone, the drive belt/chain will become slack and slip.

If that’s fine then my money would be on the slip clutch. You can get service kits for them. But prob best just get a new one.

did have a year of strife when someone gave all the slip clutches on one machine a liberal filling of grease🤦‍♂️

Thanks for reply. It is a belt drive on the side and it seems nice a tight on drive cogs, where do you get a new slip clutch from for these machines now ? and how do they come off ? I Undone it and looked but there wasn't enough room to get it apart.

My bet would be the slip clutch, only give it 1 pump of grease per season, if it’s been greased strip it down and wash out with brake cleaner, for a new one or repair kit ring Steve Thorley or Andrew Scott

Scanstone would probably still stock them if you’re near a depot, or any agri factor should be able to source them, they’re pretty generic. Try pan anglia or Spaldings.

Unfortunately Steve Thorley Potato Equipment has gone into liquidation, had an email last week about it.

I once had that happen and it was the bearings in the gearbox on the top of the machine. It turned fine with no load but when the pressure went on the rotor, it jumped the teeth. Most likely to be the slip clutch but just incase it's not check for movement in the gearbox output shaft.

Will be the slip clutch, any of your local tractor or bearing/belt supplier/transmission type places should be able to help & source/supply parts, if its been banging for a while check all the bearings
