Remapping discovery 4 for fuel economy

What sort of money is the chip do you know?
“Chip” or chipping it is a historic term, from the “olden days” when tuners used to have to swap the EEPROM memory chip containing the engine map. Hence the meaning of “chipped”

Now with the exception of Steinbauers and their ilk, tuners rarely swap over any chips, they just re-program the existing ECU. Better known as a re-map or just “mapped or mapping”

Clear as mud m’Lord?

So what does a remap cost and will it improve the mpg?

Well it doesn’t need remapping for more power...it’s tyre shredding now! It’s economy it needs
I presume its the 8sp Auto you have? if so it cant be running many revs in top gear surely?
Cant see you getting much more MPG out of one its a fairly powerfull 4x4 even by pickup standards it will eat most of them at the lights surely?
Drive with a lighter foot or shed some weight off the thing!

Yes the 8sp auto it’s the commercial so not sure how much weight could be shed as the inside looks like a shed!

I had chip boxes fitted to a BMW X5 and Range Rover. It improved the X5 marginally but the RR was too heavy or something and all it did was change down sooner and rev higher and noisier, without improving performance.

Did a re-map on the Q7 though and it was totally transformed in performance and economy. The gearchange response was keener as well. Although the economy continued to improve throughout the 65,000 miles I kept it, starting off at 26mpg and ending at 32mpg, it made a sudden and genuine 3mpg jump when it was re-mapped.

Don't ask me who did it, because I don't remember. More than ten years have passed since. I found his number somewhere and we met at a service station on the M4 and his van was chock-full of electronics and laptops, like a cross between a laboratory and an office. As soon as I got off the motorway onto A roads the difference was obvious.
