RAV-4. That's a nice little car. Very competitive with a Honda CR-V or a Hyundai or Kia or Freelander/DiscoSport. Not as popular as it once was though. Lost out to Honda and the Koreans [especially the Koreans]

Are you likely to be getting the Toyota Fortuna in the UK? Quite a few getting about here now. Seems a good alternative to a HiLux for those requiring a less industrial office. Will only two 3t though which will put some off. I think you have the Shogun Sport which is Mitsubishi’s offering in the same space.

I think the D5 looks rather ugly especially the rear compared to the D4. Perhaps the price will come down when they are made in Slovenia.

The Porsche Cayenne and Audi Q7 are made in Slovenia, as are VW group V6 and V8 Diesel engines. Do they sound like they are cheap?
Radical new shapes take time to get used to. The D3 at launch was almost universally ridiculed by existing owners, even on these farming forums, for its 'Postman Pat' van shape, yet here we are again with possibly some of the same people loving the D3 and D4 style and not liking the new one.
I bet that once you get used to it, you'll love it. If not quite love the arse end of it which is, shall we say, 'challenging' to the eye. Personally I think it adds character to the car and differentiates it from all others. There's no mistaking a D5 either from the side or the back. I can't honestly say that either view is exactly pretty, but Discovery has never been pretty. That is reserved for Range Rover.

We used to have a similar Toyota Surf in the UK but, like the Shogun Sport or the long wheelbase Vauxhall Frontera [based on a similar Isuzu design], it didn't exactly fly out of showrooms. Mitsubishi gave up on the Sport model for a good while but seem to have brought it back over the last couple of years, possibly because sales of their Shogun model is declining considerably because it is badly in need of a replacement modern model and they are more inclined to fill the niches.

Yes I can relate to that, we have had 3 x TD5's and 1 x D3 with an L200 in between...
There doesn't seem to be anything quite like them but I'm very nervous of whatever I buy being a ticking time bomb.
My Dad's got a D3 too, a manual one.. probably the only one they made..
Has it had the clutch done yet?:ROFLMAO:

Those types of models are quite popular here and all the major manufacturers have a pick up derived SUV on the market. Fortuna from Toyota, Shogun Sport from Mitsubishi, Ford have the Everest, Isuzu have the MUX, Nissan have... something that nobody buys. Perhaps they don’t have quite the same fit in the UK. A comfy, capable and affordable 4x4 that can take you across the more inaccessible areas of the country has a bigger market potential here I guess.

I pulled out behind a d5 yesterday and was was commenting how nice it looked. Even with that stupid sideways rear number plate. When it first came out I was not a fan. But then again when the bmw 5series E60 came out it was considered a munter.

your Highlander is what we call a Prado - no one here refers to them as a Landcruiser
The 2018 Highlander seems to be more Honda CR-V than Hi-lux or Prado to me.
The Prado is the 150 series Land cruiser, which used to be known in the UK as Colorado. The other model mentioned is a Hilux with passenger rear body, built on the Hilux chassis with rear live axle but on coil springs [much like the 150 in that respect but Hilux based]

Yes its not a Prado or a Land cruiser. sits between them and a RAV4 I think.
Never even noticed there existence until one of them crashed into the truck I was driving a few years ago.
Scania 1 Toyota 0:D:banghead:
Anyway here's one of the new ones.

That looks like what we call a Kluger here. All V6 petrol and 2wd over here. Total waste of time!

Think out side the box. You could get a discovery sport. Nice car. 7 seats. If you have another tow vehicle buy some thing that’ll serve two purposes.

Failing that, a damaged disco 4. 15-16 plate for 17k sell yours and put the money to repairing the damaged one. Values don’t really get affected. Just sold my late wife’s Volvo C30 which was damaged for the same money as a straight one. Even better try and buy an un register one. Every single car I own bar investment cars are damaged repaired.

The E60 is still a munter.

The E39 in its final incarnation is still gorgeous imo.

This isn't going to be easy is it.... especially when @Clive throws in the RS4....

If I hadn't been burned by this D3 I'd have a D4 in a heartbeat, however, in reality the current D3 only does around 9k a year and still manages to cost a bloody fortune in tyres fuel and maintenance (oh and 500 a year road tax) so although I love them, I'm seriously wondering if it's the best course of action to buy a D4 or a similarly priced 4x4 to only do 9 or 10k a year and still have the possibility of big bills.
If we go down the estate route it will be my wife's daily drive so an RS4, regardless of how nice it would be, probably wont happen... It would need to tow an 1800kg caravan occasionally so Audi A6 or similar? I might get away with pinching my fathers D3 for the minimal caravan journeys tbh, so could get away with A4 or similar estate, 3 series (dare I mention BMW...?:nailbiting:) or similar? What are the newer Volvo estate's like? Apparently if we're ditching the disco, it will need to be a 'nice' car that replaces it...
I could probably get a decent 5 or 6 year old estate and an 12 yr old + Touareg or RR sport or similar for my 20k if I'm careful?

If your vehicles workload is only towing 1800kg you have absolutely no need for a full size SUV like a Discovery.
A decent size car will tow that no problem.
If you are fixed on having an SUV , for a £20k budget you could find a Discovery Sport.
Or there should be lots of Range Rover Evoques to choose from.

still think a s/h Grand Cherokee is worth a look.. A lot of car there. £20k will get you a three year old one with less than 30k on clock Powerful 3lt V6 merc engine, will do 100mph+ easily, 3.5t capacity, ground clearance, proper 4wd with low ratio, locking diffs, will seat 5 comfortably with room for a full sized dog in the back.. Reliability not that bad, certainly better than a disco/ range rover sport and only half the price of one when they're 3 yrs old.
