Rope Saw

Has anyone used a Rope Saw?

I have a couple of bows to take down, and specialist tree fellers want a months wages to cut two branches off an old Oak and Ash tree!

If you're concerned about the trees' appearance and health afterwards, you would need the branches to be undercut first. Don't think you could undercut with a rope saw.If you don't undercut.you may end up with great big rips down part of the trunk. Maybe not be of concern of course but a tad unsightly and will allow rot and disease to form...

If it splits far then you’re right but start at the tip and work your way back it’ll be ok.

Both trees are on a boundary, and are absolutely dead, so no.. when approaching our neighbour about the trees, he said they have been there all my life, so Im not really bothered if they fall on your fence or not, thats nature!!

Wait until a windy day when the neighbour isn't about and push them over (away from your fence) with the tractor?

I've used a rope saw on small branches and it took AGES. If you can get close enough (safely) with a pole saw, that's much better. Even better is a pole chainsaw. If you have an inverter/generator you can use a cheap electric one in the field.

If it's a huge bough, then you might be able to make a sufficient undercut and topcut using a pole saw, then need to use a rope saw to finish off. Which will take ages.

I used an old saw chain that wasn't totally b**gerd, cut it through and made a strong wire loop on each end. Rope on one end throw over the branch and attach the other end then pull back and fore . If you can find an accomplice to go on the other end you can get as far away as you like for safety.
Need to make sure your not trying to cut with the back of the chain
Not easy but it worked
