I may be wrong, as usual, but it seems to me that the expansion of the EU and NATO right up to the border of a notoriously sensitive state is very much tweaking the tail of the tiger and asking for trouble. I remember the USA's reaction to the placement of Soviet missiles in Cuba... The only defence to that being that both those organisations are pretty dedicated to peace and the keeping of it. Nonetheless it would have been diplomatic to have left a buffer zone between us and Russia into which we would not expand.

There was always the chance that Russia and the West could have become aligned and mutually co-operative - things have actually been gently heading that way for some years. Extreme 'socialist' states have to burn out in the end because they just don't work - it was only a matter of a bit more time with Russia. It's an absolute tragedy that all the progress made towards reconciliation and co-operation has now been trashed.

I think it's imperative in the long run that Putin's course of action is defeated eventually, by whatever means. This because China is watching very closely and has far greater ambitions for expansion than Russia.

Russia has the biggest nuclear arsenal in the world and there’s potentially a mad man with his finger on the button. If he does it, it’ll be big and a statement.
Let's also not forget who Russias friends are in the world.....China and North Korea..
Both world wars didn't start as teams yelling at teams. It starts with one side and escalates when others retaliate. Enough force against Russia will either see China join in or.... Sit on the sidelines and keep their assets in tact..History is full of failed guesses. Or else we'd all win lotto every week.

Remember, it not all that long since Russian tanks, rolled down Red Square, in what turned out to be a failed coup attempt, to overthrow Gorbachev. Remember Yeltsin, climbing up on one of those tanks, to berate the crew.

Hopefully the tanks will again bear down on the Kremlin, and thus time neither people power or members of the Duma will intervene on behalf of Putin.
Ffs that 30 years ago and a few days after I was in Red Square , commrade!!!😆😆😆

I get the feeling the west is going to join this war within the next seven days probably with the biggest shock and awe type air campaign the world has ever seen, i reckon key targets in moscow and the russian army in ukraine and belarus will be hit. Tonights attack on a nuclear plant in ukraine by russian rockets was a step to far, thankfully it seems the fire is out and no harm done .

Sorry to say the West will continue to sit on it’s hands & do nothing, it’s far too late now unless you really want world war three to begin, the best we can hope for is a ceasefire & some type of negotiations. Now is the time to reinforce our NATO borders to make sure he goes no further & give some protection to the remaining non NATO countries.

just hope you are right, but you can't second guess a nutter.
What worries me, is public opinion affecting common sense, and making intervention a real possibility. And the fact that the sanctions are to effective, and as one top brass russian said, our only weapon against sanctions, is nuclear. Back a nutter into a corner, without a 'get out path' there's no way of knowing what he will do.

Does anyone have any answers?
The bombing of the power station shows how desperate the job is. It’s concerning that these important and complicated power plants are either taken over by different people or bombed like last night.

Putin isnt going to use nuclear weapons, he is scared of death and /or a world without him. He knows a nuclear strike would mean his own death too. No strong leader sits 30+ft away from his staff and hides away doing video links when his country isnt even under attack , hes a coward and not willing to die for his cause. Im happy for western leaders to call his bluff and i accept the outcome either way.
